Pfc. Benjamin B. Bartlett Jr.
25
Manchester

Mosul, Iraq
7-15-2007

Benjamin B. Bartlett Jr.'s closest friends remembered his easygoing personality and his love for Auburn football. "You couldn't stay mad at the young man, with that down-home, country, dirty Deep South Southern drawl, and the type of person who no matter what you had to say he was gonna smile and keep driving. He was just a great soldier," said one of Bartlett's commanding officers.  He was assigned to Fort Bliss. He was a member of regional championship golf and football teams, the debate and science bowl teams, and a number of service organizations in high school, which he graduated in 2000. His teachers all remember his as a very happy student who always wore a smile. After graduation, he attended Auburn University and worked in construction prior to enlisting.

Jenrette was a 1990 graduate of Lyman Ward Military Academy and a 1995 graduate of North Georgia College. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army upon graduating. He became an Army Ranger and served with the 25th Infantry Division in Hawaii. He was promoted to captain in 1999, and then was an instructor with the 5th Ranger Training Battalion at Camp Frank D. Merrill in Dahlonega.

In 2005, Jenrette transferred to the Georgia Army National Guard, where he served as a full-time officer with the Recruiting Sustainment Program. He was promoted to major in 2005.

Jenrette and his wife, Shannon Parker Jenrette, would have celebrated their 10-year anniversary on July 3. The couple have three children: Corey, 7; Brody, 5; and Megan 1, all of Lula.

In addition to his wife and children, Jenrette also is survived by his parents, retired Col. Albert W. "Bill" and Ursula Jenrette of Auburn, Ala.; a sister, Jennifer Welsh and husband George of Baton Rouge; and many members of his wife’s family living in Lula

“People need to know Jeffrey was a good man. I just want to make sure they know how good a man he was and how proud we all are of him,” his mother, Mary Lou Dowdy, said.

“Even though he was over there, he was always worried about us,” Lacey said. “He cared so much for us. He didn’t care what happened to him, as long as his family was taken care of.”

His sense of protection and wanting to provide for his family led Jeffrey, 21, to join the Georgia National Guard.

“I had a lot to do with him joining the Army,” his grandfather, Clarence White, said. “It was tough because there just aren’t that many good jobs around here. But he wanted to do it to be able to provide for his family.”

He was serving with the Calhoun-based 108th Cavalry.
Family members said Jeffrey got a lot of his strength from White, who he affectionately called Paw Paw.

“Jeffrey was always working on things and fixing things. He was changing tires on cars when he was eight years old,” his older brother, Robert Jordan, said. “He learned a lot from Paw Paw, and he was a great mechanic because of him.”

Sgt. Johnny W. Lumpkin
38
Columbus

Balad, Iraq
7-2-2010

Saturday would have marked Lumpkin and his wife Carol's ninth anniversary, said a neighbor for two years at Fort Stewart. He often would surprise her and others with acts of kindness, like repairing faulty car brakes or rescuing a friend who became stranded while off-roading. "He was always the first to help no matter what.  "He was helping someone try to get the job done." "Johnny has forever touched our lives." He was on his second tour in Iraq, was with the 1st Battalion at Fort Stewart. He had joined the Army at 31 because he wanted to support his family, relatives said. He had so much love for family, friends and fishing.  "He was a true hero to his family and to the nation."
