Sgt. Nicholas A. Gummersall 23 Chubbuck
|
Baqubah, Iraq 8-6-2007
He was a junior and the No. 1 senior running back broke his collarbone. When Gummersall got the nod to fill in, he broke out with 327 yards in one game. "He was a leader." He was a 2002 high school graduate and was assigned to Fort Lewis. Gummersall walked on to the Idaho State football team and played on the practice squad. Gummersall had a work ethic as good as any he has ever seen. "He was one of those guys you could ask to do anything, anytime," "He was a 'give the shirt off his back' kind of guy." He is survived by his parents, Carol and Clay. "Nick always pushed himself. One day at Fort Lewis, he and one of his buddies were just sitting around bored. 'Know what? Let's go climb that mountain, Mount Rainier."

He was an avid reader, always seeking knowledge and truth. Nick radiated positive energy and the smile never left his face. His favorite saying was "Quit whining" or "Quit yer bit." His laugh was both ridiculous and infectious. Nick had a profound impact on everyone in his life and this community will forever be changed.
