Sgt. Jon E. Bonnell Jr
22
Fort Dodge

Jon E. Bonnell Jr.'s father shared his son's sense of humor, honed by their favorite movie, "Tommy Boy." "We would watch that movie over and over."  "Chris Farley was his favorite comedian. He had a tear running down when Farley died. I remember that. He couldn't believe it."  He was a 2003 high school graduate and was assigned to Camp Pendleton. Bonnell was an honorable mention all-conference baseball player his senior year in high school. He was fiercely competitive, yet loyal, friends said. "He was a great person. He always put other people first," classmate and teammate.  He wanted to see the world and took the most pride in his effort to assist victims of the 2004 tsunami in Southeast Asia after his first tour. Back in Iraq, he picked up where he left off, on bomb detection duty.

Jarod L. Maher

Imugene

During his last visit home, Jarrod L. Maher savored the time he spent with his friends and family, including three younger brothers. "He spent as much time with his family as he could ... and his friends."  "He helped me finish planting my beans."  He was stationed at Camp Pendleton, Calif. When Maher returned home on leave in May, he looked forward to his mother's cooking.  "He loved anything his Mom would make."  Mayer was active in high school sports and enjoyed being outdoors hunting and fishing. He had always had an interest in the military and enlisted in the Marines right out of high school.

Lance Cpl. Clinton J. Miller
23
Greenfield

They recalled a church skit in which Clinton J. Miller played God, dressed in a black robe and deciding people''s fate at the pound of a gavel. Miller played the role with compassion.  "He was selfless, optimistic and filled with a sense of duty to both God and his country."   He was assigned to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. A 2001 high school graduate, Miller played football and wrestled. "C.J. willingly chose to put others ahead of himself,"  Before joining the Marines, Miller was an assistant wrestling coach. He showed respect for others, referring to those older than himself as "mister." Fellow coaches said students looked up to him.  Miller''s wife, Jackie, remembered her husband as patient and loving her best friend. They enjoyed singing karaoke and riding carousels together.  Kerby J. Miller, thought of him as "the ultimate son."

Spc. John W. Miller
21
West Burlington

John W. Miller was an avid reader who spent hours in his high school library devouring science fiction books. He was rarely seen without a paperback or a set of headphones. "John was a quiet person with a ready smile and a gentle heart," his family said in a statement. "He will be missed by all whose lives he had touched."  He was based in Burlington, Iowa. Miller enlisted in the Guard after the September 11 terrorist attacks because he felt it was his place to help out. At Christmas, his aunt wanted to drive home her concern for his safety.  Miller is survived by his father. His mother died four years ago. "But we know she would have been proud of him," the family said. "At least he will finally be with his mother."
