Adams joined the Guard in 2001 after he graduated from Rhinelander High School because he wanted to serve his country.
"He was very proud to serve his country. He was incredibly proud to be a soldier, and he loved doing what he did,".
His parents, Peter and Jalane, did not want to speak to reporters, Patrick Adams said. But they released a statement to WJFW-TV (Channel 12) in Rhinelander that states: "We are very proud of him. He was where he wanted to be, doing what he wanted to do. He did it with pride and honor. He was a great soldier, and he is a hero."
Ryan Adams was deployed with the Guard's 951st Engineer Company (Sapper). It was the second tour of duty for Adams and his unit. It was deployed to Iraq from May 2003 to April 2004 when it was Company C, 724th Engineer Battalion.
At Rhinelander High School, Ryan Adams was a quarterback on the football team and also played baseball, Patrick Adams said. Ryan Adams also volunteered with Angels on My Shoulder, a nonprofit cancer support group in St. Germain. The group runs camps for children affected by cancer, visits cancer patients at hospitals and clinics, provides weekend retreats for cancer caregivers, and has programs for cancer survivors.
Specialist Paul Atim did not grow up in the U.S. He joined the Army in November of 2006. He spent April 2009 - April 2010 in Afghanistan. His second deployment, however, was his last. He was were part of the the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, based in Fort Drum, N.Y. Atim came to Green Bay because of a personal relationship. Atim attended the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay in 2005-06. Atim studied there for a short time, "I have fond memories of his outgoing personality and humor. Paul came to the United States from Uganda in pursuit of a better life, and shortly afterward joined the military to serve the country he loved." Atim received two Army Achievement medals, the Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon and the Overseas Service Ribbon.
Lt. Col. Bartz was part of a team from the 10th Mountain Division headquarters to conduct key leader training and set the conditions for the 10th Mountain Division headquarters' deployment to Afghanistan later this year.
Lt. Col. Bartz served as the Assistant Chief of Staff, G-1 (Personnel) with the Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry). Bartz arrived to Fort Drum June 2009. Lt. Col. Bartz is survived by his wife and son. Lt. Col. Bartz' awards and decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, and Army Achievement Medal.
ONALASKA, Wis. - First Lt. Nick A. Dewhirst, 25, of Onalaska, Wis., an Eagle Scout, Nick was a 2001 graduate of Onalaska High School, where he was a member of the National Honor Society and Student Council. After a year at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Fla., Nick received an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and graduated in 2006 with a degree in mechanical engineering. His military awards included the National Defense Service Medal, The Army Achievement Medal and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
Nick had a passion for adventure and leadership, which led him to join the military. While attending West Point, he joined the West Point Parachute Team where he was the cadet in charge during his first year. Nick also completed Special Forces Combat Diver Qualification at the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School in Key West, Fla. After graduation from the academy, Nick completed the elite Army Ranger Course at Fort Benning, Ga., the Airborne, Air Assault and Officer Leadership courses. In addition he enjoyed recreational rock climbing, scuba diving and base parachute jumping.

He was born Keith Everette Lloyd on May 6, 1981, in Milwaukee and attended Lincoln Avenue Elementary School before his family moved to Oak Creek and then South Milwaukee. While at Lincoln Avenue school, he played volleyball and enjoyed Nintendo video games featuring the likes of the Super Mario Brothers and stars of the World Wrestling Federation. As he grew older, he enjoyed movies and Green Bay Packers games and, for a time, played volleyball for South Milwaukee High School. High school wasn't his favorite thing, but he did it because he knew he had to. Lloyd graduated from South Milwaukee in 2000 and worked at a number of retail sites, including Farm & Fleet and Pick 'n Save stores.
Jacob Alexander Meinert was born June 24, 1989, in Racine. He attended Red Apple Elementary School and Jerstad-Agerholm Middle School in Racine before moving to Fort Atkinson. Jacob graduated from Fort Atkinson High School in 2007.
Matthew R. Zindars was always a good student who never got into any trouble. "I always think of him as sitting in the classroom and he always had this mischievous smile on his face," "He was always well behaved but he always had that grin where you could tell he was up to something and he was always thinking. He was a 2004 high school graduate and was assigned to Camp Pendleton. An outdoor-loving former football player, Zindars liked snowboarding, rock climbing and hunting. He spoke of entering the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater to study journalism. "He was a great kid and never gave us any trouble."
